This book will grab you from the first to the last page. Harriet is very frightened of her abusive husband, but no one knows he's abusive. Like most abusers he can become a different person around other people, put the simmering rage on the backburner until they leave and unleash everything at the exact moment they're gone.
Sophie has lived across the hall from Dan and Harriet for a little while. She noticed Harriet come home with Dan and her lip is bleeding profusely. Dan tells her some half cocked story about how clumsy Harriet is and just sweet talks Sophie. That night Sophie watches as Harriet leaves with a suitcase and doesn't understand how she could leave a sweet and loving man.
Read this book to find out everything that happens next. You will not be disappointed, but be prepared for a wild rollercoaster ride!

I liked the narration of this book for the most part, although a lot of it was mundane things (which doesn’t bother me). The twist was given away for me in a review of this book, so if you’re looking forward to reading this, steer clear of reviews if you haven’t already had it spoiled. I wouldn’t necessarily call this book a psychological thriller, I wasn’t really on the edge of my seat but it was still enjoyable.

I felt a lot was left hanging at the end. If anyone deserved a happy ending, Sophie/Harriet did, and unless there is a sequel, she didn't get it. It was hard to understand her panic attacks. Were they from her childhood, or her disastrous marriage? What happened to Andrew's ex? Was she behind all the strange happenings surrounding Sophie? It seemed that Sophie just accepted her fate, and may have been relieved, but it didn't seem she really made any progress, because Andrew was there for her, but she ignored him. Julia could have helped her, too, but Sophie wouldn't let her. It is doubtful she got "well" at all.

I realize 5 stars implies a practically perfect book, which this isn’t, I’m still giving it 5 stars because as a first novel, it was brilliant! Were there parts that could have been tweaked to make it even better? Of course. Were there editing errors that should have been caught and corrected by a good proofreader/editor? You bet. But none of this detracted from the storyline, or my enjoyment of the book. I’ll look forward to reading more from this author, as I’m pretty sure this wasn’t a one off, and the need for the above mentioned tweaks and proofreading will no longer be an issue. Well done!

The plot is interesting enough but the writing makes it hard to read. Very many incorrect verb tenses: went instead of go, knew instead of know, passed instead of past, etc. The lead character is referred to as "the woman", "the detective", and by name, sometimes within the same paragraph.

Harriet is a woman living a nightmare of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her monster of a husband, Dan. When she finally gains the courage to flee, she lands in Coventry, and sets up a small business as a painter and gallery owner. But the Harriet we think we know isn't really the Harriet we've come to expect, and what at first seems like a simple story of a woman fleeing abuse turns out to be much more complicated. The author skillfully links 'our' Harriet to her former neighbour Sophie, a woman who lived across the hall from her when she was married to Dan. Through a series of elegantly-executed plot twists and turns, the lives of Harriet and Sophie dovetail with disastrous consequences as the violent, mentally unhinged Dan shows up to claim what he feels is rightfully his.
This book kept me turning pages, as the story unfolded bit by bit in my imagination. As soon as I thought I knew where the story was going, it changed; this kept me off-balance and ramped up the narrative tension to an almost unbearable degree. A fantastic novel by an author of genuine talent, who knows how to combine disparate plot elements to create a compulsively-readable story you won't want to put down.
